Nine Things I’m Thankful for Today

Nine Things I'm Thankful for Today -christyfitzwater.com

I cried on our drive to Libby yesterday, telling Matt how I can’t stop thinking about the 8000 Syrian refugees who have been landing on the shores of Greece every day for the last month. I keep picturing one family I read about, as they threw their last possessions (money and passports) overboard, to keep from sinking the raft.

They landed in a new country with nothing.

Then we got to church in Libby where Matt was preaching, and a lady told us how not too many months ago she was evicted, homeless, and in a bad way.

So I come into a new work week, with my own pile of concerns on my plate, and I want to swing toward thankfulness instead of toward anxiety. I am starting the day by pulling back and looking at my life, in comparison to how many people in the world are living in this same hour.

Nine Things I’m Thankful for Today

  1. Clean underwear. (The mom in me can’t imagine these Syrian women who have no change of clean undies for their families.)
  2. Shelter, with cute pumpkin decorations and a heater.
  3. Slippers and my grandma’s quilt.
  4. No one trying to kill me or chase me out of my house.
  5. Employment, even with its challenges and ups and downs.
  6. A bed to sleep in tonight.
  7. Breakfast. Lunch. Supper.
  8. Coffee.
  9. A sense of belonging.

If I am ever the one in the homeless, destitute place, I want to be a thankful person, so I’m practicing today.

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV)

Despite the hard circumstances in your life (I’m sure you have some), what are you thankful for today?

  1. I am thankful for the sun, the rain, my lovely daughter and my love. I am thankful for your blog and message of faith and hope it brings us every day. We should consider ourselves lucky that we have and do not always want more. So many people in this world is so little. So always keep them in our prayers and hope that our faith can help them bear the unbearable.
    Thank you.

    1. Beautifully said. And yes, while we thank God for our blessings, we need to pray everyday and give, to help people who are suffering so much.

  2. Frankly, I am thankful for Godly men and women who pour their hearts out in written form to encourage people outside of themselves. You encourage me daily, Christy, and it’s such a blessing. Thank you for all of your hard work – I know how NOT easy it is to write. Be blessed, sister.

    1. I was just thinking that this morning, as I was digesting a book by Paul David Tripp. We receive and pass it on!

  3. I am thankful for a husband whose heart is set on following God and he loves me beautifully.
I am thankful for our 4 children who laugh together.
I am thankful for a wide sense of humor and for things to laugh about.
I am thankful for steroids that helped 4 of us function as poison ivy proved the curse is still in full swing.

    1. A sense of humor is a beautiful thing!! And ooh am I sorry about the poison ivy. That’s not a problem we face up here. We have grizzly bears instead. 🙂
