A Donut for Monday

Don’t you want a glimpse of my new Spanish classroom? School starts in two weeks, and I’ve been working day by day to create a cozy space. I decorate with apples at home in September, to celebrate school starting, so I thought I’d bring apples to my class. (Caleb said, No, Mom. Not aaaapples!!! He’s super excited to start school.)

This school where I’m teaching has something incredible I wasn’t expecting…

The first day I totally destroyed the room –pulled books off shelves, filled the garbage, and ripped paper off the bulletin board.

The next when I returned the mess was all GONE! What!

Then I covered a bulletin board in burlap, but I had to trim it, which covered the floor with burlap string.

When I came back, the floor was vacuumed and all the tables and chairs set up in neat rows.

Dear Mr. Maintenance man,

You are my new best friend.

Do you know what it feels like for a mom to have someone come behind and pick up after her, without her even asking?

I recently read Ben Carson’s autobiography, Gifted Hands. He is a world-class pediatric neurosurgeon whose intelligence and gift of surgery is off the charts. But he says he always makes sure to notice the people around him who serve. He doesn’t take them for granted.

When I got a tour of my new school we stopped by the maintenance office. Mr. Maintenance said, You can only enter here if you bring donuts.

I’m totally bringing that man donuts!

How about you –maybe a donut on Monday morning for that person who does the little things that make your life easier?

Paul says, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV) I know he means to thank God, but maybe whenwe live thankful toward the people around us it’s the same thing.
