How to Stop Feeling So Tired Inside

Well, has your December calendar worn you out yet? If you’re coming into Christmas tired of soul, here’s a word of encouragement that I wrote a few years ago. It just needed some dusting off, and I think the message still fits. Merry Christmas to you, dear friend. Merry Christmas.

I like a thick ream of blank, white copy paper or a just-purchased notebook or a new Word document. Because I like to pull up words from inside my soul and hear them scratch loud on a piece of paper.

But yesterday I was tired. After several hours of slogging uselessly through the day, I realized I was tired of creating. Tired of thinking of blog posts ideas and Awana lessons and devotional submissions. Tired of thinking about the book I want to finish writing now and the new one that just came to mind.

Tired of thinking.

On the way into Taco Bell with my man I said, “Wouldn’t it be nice…” Wouldn’t it be nice to just make tacos? Some task that is useful but that doesn’t need to be yanked from my soul and put all naked out on the internet? For a few hours I had that quitting feeling.

But I didn’t really want to give up.

So for about 15 minutes yesterday afternoon I turned away from the desk. I grabbed my Bible, swiveled in my chair with my back turned to the computer, and took my tired to God.

Tired, Lord. Just so tired.

And for a time I didn’t try to create anything or have any world-changing ideas. I prayed and told God how I felt –and asked if he could please do something about it.

I opened the Bible to Isaiah 40:31.

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (NIV)

I spent some time hoping.

Just sat in my chair and waited for a breath of life, hoping for some of that renewal of strength. I was not disappointed. Which is why when I swiveled back around in my chair I had some words for this page.

Fresh strength is available to us in any moment we choose to reach for it.

Doesn’t really matter why you’re tired. You just need to know hoping in the Lord is the way to renew your strength. And hoping requires at least a time of stopping, even for 10 or 15 minutes, with Bible in your lap and eyes turned to Jesus.

Can you snag some time to sit quietly and hope in the Lord today?

  2. Yes, thank you, I just did…. the house is quiet, one child up and out the door to work retail, the dog is fed, enjoying the time of peace. Thank you!
