How to Respond to The Long, Hard Season

How to Respond to The Long, Hard Season -christyfitzwater.com

It’s freezing out here. I’m sitting in my car, in front of the high school, with some time to kill before I accompany the next round of vocalists for festival practice. Cars are driving by covered in a few inches of white, and I can see the snow clouds pressing down on the mountains to my right.

Should have worn a coat today. But in northern Montana we develop false optimism that maybe spring on the calendar will show itself to be spring in the air.

So I’m sitting in my car watching the United States flag wave full and straight. The icy wind -that moments ago had whipped through my clothes and chilled me to the bones- is the same wind that brings the flag to full glory.

Faith is a flag, I think.

The banner of faith hangs limp and unnoticed until a fierce line is drawn on the weather map and the storm moves in.

Icy trials.

Dark.

Miserable.

Cold.

Unrelenting.

The soul unfurls with every gust, and all that is hard in our lives gives lift to our trust in God –creates magnificent evidence of our heart’s allegiance.

In you, LORD my God, I put my trust. (Psalm 25:1 NIV)

It may be harsh, this season you’re going through, but what if you open yourself to the trial and let your faith grow?

  1. Wow. I really like this imagery and comparison. A flag is a symbol of strength and freedom; our unfurled faith is that too. My mom has been diagnosed with ALS. Everyday is a new adjustment and surrender. Freedom to fall into His faithful promises. Faith in knowing He has a perfect plan; that he loves her so much more than we all do. Rising up on eagles wings and surrendering, knowing His strength is in me. Hmm…and all for His glory. Old glory. He is so good.

    1. Oh, I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. That is a long, hard road. I pray God will give you strength and encouragement.
