Is Your Theology for Every Day?

I told that girl of mine she should put Corelle Ware on her wedding registry, because in my cupboard are a stack of bowls and plates that have lasted us almost 23 years. I’ve dropped them on the floor and have taken them to picnics. I’ve chiseled off eggs and cheddar cheese and avocado. I’ve heaped them high with hot dogs and macaroni and cheese and handed them to wiggly little kids.

Corelle lasts, and there’s no better dish to get an even cooking distribution in the microwave.

Then there are those delicate, hand-painted, Japanese-made, Noritake dishes that we call China and that my dad bought for his mom when he was serving in Vietnam. Such beautiful dishes –they look lovely in my hutch, and I take them out and dust them once a year.

When you lose someone you love or your kid gets in trouble or your house burns down or your finances require more than a darning needle (true stories from real people this week), which kind of theology do you need? The too-pretty-to-use kind or the everyday, serve-Little-Caesars-on-it kind?

Do we believe we are as sinful as the next guy?

Do we believe God is good and has our best interest at heart?

Do we believe God provides?

Do we believe we are chosen and rescued and loved and useful?

Do we believe there is heaven and a reward?

Do we believe God responds to our prayers?

Or is all that theology just a pretty dish collecting dust on a shelf?

“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness…” (2 Peter 1:3.)

Everything we need for life –that sounds like something sturdy that can endure 7300 trips through the dishwasher.
