Your Day in the Hands of the Creator

Over the last few weeks, I’ve realized I probably should go outside. I see pictures of people on Facebook who have been outside, and it seems interesting but foreign. Here I am in the house reading books and…reading books.

I opened a friend’s blog post a few days ago and scrolled through pictures of her family hiking through the woods. She talked about breathing in fresh air and feeling refreshed after an hour.

Fresh air!

Our boy was gone this weekend (on a college retreat that seniors in high school were invited to –big sigh from this momma.) On Saturday night Matt said to me, What do you want to do tomorrow?

I need some fresh air, I said. Wanna drive up to Glacier?

He thought that sounded nice.

My current obsession with L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables sealed the deal. Said Ann:

Why must people kneel down to pray? If I really wanted to pray I’ll tell you what I’d do. I’d go out into a great big field all alone or in the deep, deep woods and I’d look up into the sky…up…up…up…into that lovely blue sky that looks as if there was no end to its blueness. And then I’d just feel a prayer.

So the preacher and I ate lunch and then drove the 30 minutes to the entry of Glacier National Park, away from internet connection, chores, and books.

First stop was the outhouse at McDonald’s Lake Lodge, because I foolishly had enjoyed a large mug of coffee on the drive into the park. Can you imagine how “refreshingly cool” an outhouse is in Montana in February? I was quite wide awake after that experience.

We had such a delightful walk around the lake, and we even managed to take a selfie without looking at my thumb.

Are you breathing deeply? Matt asked, as we walked along an icy path.

Big inhale.

Yes, and doesn’t it smell good in the woods? I said.

We listened to the water on the creek and watched the clouds and sun move across the lake.

Look at this great find…

This would be my kind of camping –reading books in a warm cabin close to nature but not actually in it.

We talked about kayaking and wouldn’t it be fun to kayak in February, except brrr.

On the way home I sighed about this beautiful place in which we live, and then I thought about Monday and my tax appointment and teaching Spanish and what would we have for dinner.

And we just need to remember that the God who created tall cedars and mountain lakes and rushing creeks comes with us into our work day.

O Lord my God, you are very great;

you are clothed with splendor and majesty…

He makes springs pour water into the ravines;

it flows between the mountains…

He waters the mountains from his upper chambers;

the earth is satisfied by the fruit of his work.

(Psalm 104:1,10,13 NIV)

The God of Glacier National Park steps into our day with us.

Where he is the air is fresh.

Breathe deeply.
